As a dramaturg, Misha specializes in developing emotionally resonant narratives that merge psychological depth with powerful storytelling. His experience as a Gestalt therapist brings an added dimension to his writing, helping him craft characters and conflicts that feel authentic and deeply human.
Beyond his directing career, teaching has become an equally significant part of his work. Misha has dedicated much of his time to developing unique training programs. He is the founder of Misha Kostrov Studio of Acting and co-founder of the Black Square Acting and Improvisation Studio, where he combines traditional acting techniques with psychological insights to help students unlock their creative potential. His innovative approach empowers actors to connect with their inner selves, explore emotions authentically, and bring greater depth to their performances.
In addition to his work in film and theatre, Misha is a certified Gestalt therapist, having graduated from the Kyiv Gestalt University. His background in psychology deeply informs his teaching methods, fostering a safe and supportive space where students can explore vulnerability, presence, and self-expression.
Currently completing his Master’s degree at the University of Ottawa, Misha’s thesis focuses on the creation of post-traumatic tragedy. His research explores the intersection of classical tragedy structures and the psychological stages of recovery from trauma. His work is both theoretical and practical, culminating in the development of a play that tells the story of a soldier grappling with life after severe physical injuries and emotional scars.
Misha’s artistic vision is rooted in the belief that art has the power to unite people, heal emotional wounds, and foster personal growth. As a playwright, director, and therapist, he strives to create work that reveals the richness of human experience — exploring themes of resilience, identity, and the power of connection.
